Baby Quilts: Members who have been with the guild for at least 6 months receive a quilt when they have a baby. The Baby Quilts Chairperson coordinates the preparation of the quilts. Quilts are pieced and put together by other QGI members. To be eligible to receive a baby quilt the QGI member must be a current fully paid Guild member for a minimum of one year prior to the year the baby quilt would be received. A member can receive only one QGI baby quilt. Baby Quilt Contact: Jennifer Newburg javictory@yahoo.com

Quilting Bees: QGI sponsored quilting bees offer members opportunities for more intimate gatherings with each other. Currently, QGI has more than 20 bees, most arranged geographically. Make new friends, learn new techniques, and receive encouragement to get those UFOs done by joining a bee.

Charity Projects:
Preemie Quilts ~ Two area hospitals use 80 preemie quilts a month. Individual Guild members and Bees are active in helping provide for this need. The basic size requested by the hospital is 16 inches by 16 inches. Quilts do not have to be square; either side could range from 14 to 20 inches - since preemies range in size also! The quilt must be comfortable and washable. Traditional binding is fine, but these quilts are often sewn "envelope-style". Cotton batting should be low loft - or none at all to improve the drape. A cotton top with a flannel backing and no batting works nicely. This is a great opportunity to practice your machine quilting skills on a small piece. If you choose to tie your quilt, be careful to clip threads SHORT to prevent tangles around TINY fingers and toes. If you are really ambitious, hand quilting is always lovely, too. Dress an Angel ~ Unfortunately, not all of the preemies survive. Guild members have been active for several years in providing gowns and bonnets for these tiny babies, who are too small for retail newborn clothing. The gowns are donated to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis and are used as funeral garments or keepsakes for the parents who select cremation. The hospital gives the family a memory box with their quilt, gown, and photos of the child dressed in the gown. Patterns for the gown and bonnet are available at guild meetings. Or click here for instructions and a pattern..
Quilt-In ~ QGI members celebrate National Quilt Day in true quilters' fashion by quilting for others. QGI members gather on the third Saturday of March to "sandwich" and tie quilt tops completed throughout the year by guild members. All quilts are later distributed to area charities. The 17th Annual Quilt-In will be held in March15 , 2008. Directions National Quilt In Contact: Tracy Barta tracyquilts@earthlink.net |
