Featured Artist
Leigh Layton

We are excited to present Leigh Layton, our Featured Artist for the 2022 QGI Quilt Show. Leigh is a quilt artist extraordinaire.  She has been retired for 5 years after working for Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance 39 years as a Systems Development Manager.

Leigh’s journey in quilting is rich with adventures.  “I am a quilt artist who loves to try new techniques.  With my trusty Ipad, I love to manipulate photos into patterns, print them, thread paint them or make mosaics.” she explains. Experimentation and innovation would describe her energy and drive.

She got her start in 1988.   Her journey was eclectic – quilting, machine embroidery, learning Electric Quilt  and other technological software programs, free motion quilting, appliqueing, postcards, applique mosaics as well as printing fabric panels and fabric on demand.  She has also started using her Brother Scan nCut for her mosaics.  She bought a longarm in 2004 and hasn’t looked back.  Her free-motion quilting and thread painting are breath-taking.

Leigh’s generosity is admirable.  Over the years she has made and gifted approximately 150 or so quilts, including baby quilts, graduation and just gifts for friends, family and co-workers.  “That’s how I learned to quilt!” she says. But she still does it today, combining her new ideas into current works.  Many of us are the happy recipients of her annual Christmas quilted postcards.

Leigh’s talents are recognized by the ribbons she has won at various quilt shows.  And her quilts have been accepted at numerous national quilt shows such as IQA Houston show, Mancuso Mid-Atlantic show, Mancuso Pacific show, Road to California and the Indiana Heritage Show.  She has received numerous ribbons in those shows as well as the QGI shows.

Leigh has done lectures and classes for our guild as well as other guilds in the area.

Leigh is the president of INFiber, a local art quilt group which brings together many talented fiber artists in the Central Indiana area.  She is the co-founder of two bees, Therapy for the Soul and IMAQs.  She also developed an annual quilting/sewing retreat for friends and former co-workers.  She has held several positions in the Quilters Guild of Indianapolis such as secretary, Vice President, President (2000), Programs and currently helps maintain the Guild’s website.

It will be a treat to visit with Leigh and see many of her quilts.  You mustn’t miss her current series of mosaics and panel creation.  Check out her Facebook group.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/462704292244748/?ref=share
