Revisitng Old Projects

The last two years have given me time to revisit my unfinished workshop projects. Some are only parts of a quilt like a block that needs companions to complete or maybe it's a nearly complete project that requires an innovation to make it come alive.

In this case, I found a top I made from 2019 Chris Kirsch workshop on drafting compasses. We made a large one in class using a pizza pie pan as the template and then proceded to draft the compass within the circle using her methods. I was pleased with the result. Her compasses are generally the standard 12 point block, but then I got to thinking about 60 degree compasses and what they would look like. So I drafted one and made that after class. My final compass block came out of EQ8 and was paper-pieced in sections.

All three blocks were either inset or appliqued onto a beautiful blue green batik. The unfinished quilt then went into the drawer with other projects to be completed and eventually forgotten. This year I pulled out the top and put it on my design wall. I was not thrilled about the setting or the colors and knew it needed something more.

Chris had shown us some setting examples in her class and one of them had flying geese in it that added alot of movement and interest. So I located my ombre fabrics and started playing with colors. I decided I like the pink to purple the best because it complemented the colors in the blocks and background but created enough contrast so they didn't dissappear. Taking advantage of the variation in color I made a wedge shape from which I cut the 60 degree triangles and then fused them onto the quilt in a swirly design.

The top instantly came to life with the addition of the triangles and the introduction of new colors. Below is the result. It is yet to be quilted, but I already have ideas about that.

I hope you revisit some of your old class projects and breathe life into them like I did.
